For Patrick Mahomes, the days leading up to Super Bowl 2024 weren’t all that super.
One week before playing against the San Francisco 49ers, the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback’s dad Pat Mahomes Sr. was arrested on his third DWI charge. Reflecting on the situation, Patrick said his father’s trouble with the law at the time definitely shifted his focus away from the big game.
“It became a story, and so, I had to answer questions about it,” Patrick recounted on the Aug. 20 episode of ESPN’s The Kingdom. “I think just knowing that it hurt me woke him up to know that like, you can’t keep doing the same things.”
Pat Sr. agreed, saying that for Patrick, 29, “to have to answer questions about me was probably the most embarrassing thing I’ve ever been through in my life.”
And as a former MLB player, he knew just how important mental focus is to an athlete.
“I called him right after,” the 55-year-old recalled, “and I told him, I said, ‘I’m sorry that it’s taking away from your time and taking away from your focus.'”
