Lee Corso receives major honor before Miami-Florida State Game

There isn’t a personality in college football quite like former coach and longtime “College GameDay” analyst Lee Corso.

Corso had been part of “College GameDay” since its inception in 1987, and while the show’s growth isn’t solely his doing, it certainly wouldn’t be what it is today without his energy and iconic weekly headgear picks.

Though many remember him for his television presence, Corso also had a distinguished coaching career at several high-profile programs, including Florida State (as a graduate assistant), Maryland, Navy, Louisville, Indiana, and Northern Illinois. He was also a standout player at Florida State.

At 90 years old, Corso, who retired from “College GameDay” earlier this season, recently received a prestigious honor ahead of Saturday night’s rivalry game between the Seminoles and the Miami Hurricanes in Tallahassee. He was awarded the Governor’s Medal of Freedom by Ron DeSantis and spent time on the Florida State campus with the football team.

“Coach Corso moved to Florida as a kid and was a highly recruited athlete,” DeSantis said. “He ended up at Florida State and played defensive back, running back, quarterback — you name it, he was a jack of all trades. Coach Corso has the same number of career interceptions as Deion Sanders at Florida State, which is pretty cool. And I’ll note for the record, on his final College GameDay appearance in Week 1 of this year, all of his picks were correct, including Florida State over Alabama.

“Lee has been a fixture of college football,” DeSantis added. “He has devoted his life to the game he loves, and he has made all Floridians proud.”

Fans had some strong reactions to Corso’s well-deserved honor.

“What a fun time at the mansion! Thanks @GovRonDeSantis for honoring Coach Lee Corso!” A fan said.

Someone else added, “That’s awesome.”

Another person wrote, “Incredible honor for a true legend! Congratulations, Coach Corso, and thank you for everything you’ve done for the game.”

“We love you coach! Go Noles!” A fan reacted.

One more fan commented, “Awesome! This is a very good thing. Great way to honor Coach Lee Corso!”

As DeSantis noted, Corso wrapped up his TV career on “College GameDay” following Week 1’s episode in Columbus, Ohio.

Remarkably, he correctly predicted all five of his picks and was the only panelist to select Florida State over Alabama — arguably the biggest upset of the weekend.
