Julie Plec Adapting Stephanie Garber Novel ‘Alchemy Of Secrets’ For TV At Universal Television
EXCLUSIVE: Julie Plec (The Vampire Diaries, We Were Liars) is developing a drama series based on the Stephanie Garber novel “Alchemy of Secrets” for Universal Television.
Based on the book released on October 7, “Alchemy of Secrets” follows Holland St. James, who was informed by a local legend named the Watch Man that she’ll die tomorrow unless she finds an ancient object called the Alchemical Heart. Holland plunges into the magical world at the heart of Los Angeles—and into the path of a magnetic stranger. As they chase clues that take them closer to the Alchemical Heart, Holland isn’t sure who to trust and if the Alchemical Heart can save her.
USG’s Creative Acquisitions and IP Management team secured the rights to the novel in a competitive bidding process.
“Out of everything I’ve written, Alchemy of Secrets is the book that I really wanted to see adapted for film or television. I’ve been ecstatic from the moment Universal Television first reached out. Then I met with Julie Plec, and it truly felt like a wild fever dream come true. I’ve followed Julie’s work for years. In some ways, I feel as if her storytelling is part of how I learned to write; I think she’s incredible at weaving magic into the real world, and I cannot wait to work with her and the UTV team to bring Alchemy of Secrets to life.”
Added Plec, “From the moment we started reading Alchemy, we knew we had found something special. Stephanie, whose masterful storytelling has captivated millions of readers, crafts a thrilling, jaw-dropping world with brilliantly tortured characters. It’s a story that drips with romance and intrigue. We’re honored that she has entrusted us, along with UTV, with bringing this magical love letter to Los Angeles to life.”
In addition to writing, Plec will executive produce alongside her producing partner Emilly Cummins, both under Plec’s My So-Called Company banner, currently under an overall deal at Universal Television. Garber also EPs.
My So-Called Company recently saw the renewal of its Prime Video YA mystery series We Were Liars for a second season. They are also developing the tennis academy series Rally for Prime Video with Andre Agassi and Entertainment 360. Before that, they produced The Girls on the Bus for Max, inspired by a chapter in Amy Chozick’s best-selling book Chasing Hillary. Plec is also responsible for the Vampire Diaries Universe, which spanned 13 years and more than 300 episodes of television. Plec is repped by WME, Entertainment 360, and Felker, Toczek, Suddleson, Abramson LLP.
Garber is the #1 New York Times and internationally bestselling author of “Caraval” and “Once Upon a Broken Heart.” Her books have been translated into more than thirty languages. “Alchemy of Secrets” is her latest novel. She is repped by UTA and Bent Agency.
