Is ‘House Of The Dragon’ Ending With Season 4? HBO Boss Casey Bloys Addresses The Question

Will Season 4 of House of the Dragon be its last? HBO boss Casey Bloys addressed that question during the premium’s cabler’s presentation Thursday in New York City.

It was announced earlier Thursday that the Game of Thrones prequel series had been renewed for a fourth season for premiere in 2028. Showrunner Ryan Condal, in comments last year, was emphatic that the series would conclude with Season 4, but there was no mention of that when HBO renewed it earlier today. Sources tell us Condal is still writing the fourth season and he will make the final decision after it is completed.

Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO, HBO and Max Content, said that he’d give his “boilerplate” answer to the question. “For all of [our] shows, we generally try to leave it to the creators to make that decision. We’ll work with them. Sometimes, people will work through the season to feel like, ‘Does it feel like a natural end? Does it not?’ So, I don’t have updates for you on any of that. But when we do, I’ll let you know.”

House of the Dragon, based on George R.R. Martin’s “Fire & Blood” is set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones. It tells the story of House Targaryen. The eight-episode Season 2, which wrapped in August 2024, picked up immediately after the death of Lucerys Velaryon, Rhaenyra’s son, at the hands of Aemond Targaryen. The season focused on the escalating conflict, moving the story from a cold war into the fiery “Dance of the Dragons” civil war.

The season 3 cast includes Matt Smith, Emma D’Arcy, Olivia Cooke, Steve Toussaint, Rhys Ifans, Fabien Frankel, Ewan Mitchell, Tom Glynn-Carney, Sonoya Mizuno, Harry Collett, Bethany Antonia, Phoebe Campbell, Phia Saban, Jefferson Hall, Matthew Needham, James Norton, Tom Bennett, Kieran Bew, Kurt Egyiawan, Freddie Fox, Clinton Liberty, Gayle Rankin, and Abubakar Salim.

Martin and Ryan Condal, who serves as showrunner, co-created the series and executive produce. Sara Hess, Melissa Bernstein, Kevin de la Noy, Vince Gerardis, David Hancock and Philippa Goslett also executive produce.
