‘Fourth Wing’: Meredith Averill Poised To Become New Showrunner Of Amazon Series Based On Book

Amazon MGM Studios‘ adaptation of Rebecca Yarros’ bestselling novel Fourth Wing is closing in on a new showrunner. Wednesday Season 2 executive producer Meredith Averill is in finale negotiations to board the project as writer and executive producer, sources tell Deadline.

She would succeed Moira Walley-Beckett who left in June, a year after she was tapped to pen the adaptation. WandaVision creator Jac Schaeffer was among a number of top writers who met on the project.

The Fourth Wing TV series comes from Michael B. Jordan’s Outlier Society, Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy’s Kilter Films and Premediated Productions.

Planned as a five-book series, with Fourth Wing (2023), Iron Flame (2023) and Onyx Storm (2025) as the first three titles, The Empyrean follows twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail as she leaves the life of a Scribe behind at her mother’s demand that she become a dragon rider. At the order of her mother, who is a General in the military of Navarre, Violet enters the brutal ranks of Basgiath War College, which trains up-and-coming riders through the Graduate or Die method.

Fourth Wing has spent 88 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list, 18 of them at #1.

Averill was co-developer, executive producer and co-showrunner on Netflix’s Locke & Key, based on the comic books. She was creator/executive producer on the CW’s Star-Crossed and also executive produced Netflix’s The Haunting of Hill House.
