Dog wants to come downstairs, viewers unprepared for what home cam captures 

A dog owner was shocked to discover how her pup was getting downstairs after watching her pet cam footage—she is now taking him to the vet for a health check.

In a viral TikTok video share in January by @ryleenick, the pup can be seen running halfway down the stairs and then jumping from the railing down to the floor, smashing his body down with full force. 

“Needless to say, my husband and I will be doing something about this open space this weekend…” the caption says. “It’s like he knew he already had a vet appointment today…” 

Dogs can face significant risks on stairs, especially puppies, seniors, and breeds with long spines. Experts say that, while most canines naturally learn to navigate steps, injuries can still occur, ranging from strains to fractures or head trauma.  

Experts at Pet MD say supervising dogs on stairs helps owners spot early signs of orthopedic or neurological issues, such as difficulty climbing, reluctance to descend, bunny hopping, or leaning on walls for balance.  

Improving visibility with better lighting reduces accidents, particularly for canines with poor eyesight or mobility challenges. Adding carpet or stair runners provides traction, and toe grips can help dogs who struggle on slippery surfaces.  

For pups unable to manage stairs, non‑slip ramps offer a safer alternative, though they may require training and positive reinforcement.  

Small dogs, post‑surgery pets, or sedated canines may need to be carried, while larger pups might require slings or blocked‑off stair access to stay safe.
