No. 9 Westlake scores early, often in 58-14 romp over Austin High

AUSTIN (KXAN) — No. 9 Westlake built a 42-7 lead by halftime and cruised to a 58-14 win over Austin High on senior night Thursday at Chaparral Stadium.

“We did good things in all three phases,” Chaparrals head coach Tony Salazar said. “It was a complete victory. It was a great night; I wish we played at home every week.”

It was just the second time this season that the Chaps played at their home stadium in six games, and the program honored 70 seniors before the game. It’s the largest senior class in program history.

Westlake posted three scores on the board before the Maroons got in the end zone, but it wasn’t the offense that did it. Jayson Martinez intercepted Rees Wise and returned it 46 yards for a touchdown, cutting the Chaps lead t0 21-7 after the PAT with 5:16 left in the second quarter.

The Chaps responded, however, with a great connection between Wise and Jack Newhouse for a 54-yard touchdown. Newhouse shook the defensive back with a move at the top of his route over the middle, and Wise zipped a pass to hit him in stride. Newhouse broke a tackle, and then it was all yards after the catch for Newhouse seconds after Austin High’s big defensive play.

After recording a safety in the third quarter, Westlake’s Rhett Jenkins turned in a special teams highlight with a 76-yard kick return for a touchdown. The PAT extended Westlake’s lead to 58-7 with 6:28 left in the frame.

Austin High added an offensive touchdown in the third. Quarterback Whit Davenport sold a run fake perfectly, after rolling to his right, found Brady Ford with nobody near him for an 11-yard touchdown.

No. 9 Westlake (5-1, 2-0) hits the meat of its district schedule with Bowie next week, and then the Battle of the Lakes with rival Lake Travis on Oct. 24. Austin (1-6, 1-2) takes on Akins next week.
